lyrics

Human beings have been killing since before we learned to speak
To reach the peak of human progress, we’ll craft the technology
To kill the soil beneath our feet and make a graveyard of the sea
To manufacture room for something else to fill our vacancy

And lord, I know I’ll wax romantic in another place and time
About the beauty and nobility in all of humankind
But that’s just beauty like the louse’s beauty in the eyes of lice
Inside the limited perspective of our stupid human lives

To every creature we destroy, we’ll only ever be a blight
A pack of ghosts haunting the planet, howling banshees in the night

Armed with an economy designed to cheat and swindle
A holy quest from high to squander all of our potential
A comedy so sad that when you laugh the air turns black
From all the soot and toxic runoff trickling down the mountain paths

The truth is that we’re locusts with two thumbs and the propensity
To communicate through sound and symbol with such great efficiency
That we can mass produce machines that pointed at each other
Can propel in rapid motion hot lead into one another

We’re the apex predator that fit the planet in its mouth
And found the only thing left afterwards to consume was itself

And so, bewildered, we observe the frothing mad-men at the helm
Mouthing silently a protest that was meant to be a shout
And as the planet burns around us, we can’t help but crack a smile
Cause it was beautiful to live, if only for a little while...
